It’s hard to find a proper free VPN these days, with many services preying on careless users. However, I still think that Windscribe and ProtonVPN are some of the best free VPNs. So, what makes them special and which one is better for you? This video will find out just that, bring the end to the Windscribe vs ProtonVPN confrontation once and for all.

To be super brief, free VPNs don’t have the best reputation. A lot of them are straight up malicious, filled with adware or fake – I’ve done a whole video about that. However, Windscribe and ProtonVPN are few services worth being called best free VPNs.

=== Privacy ===

There’s a lot of differences between ProtonVPN vs Windscribe in that regard. Windscribe is based in Canada, which notably is the part of 5-eyes alliance, however this VPN has not revealed any user data despite receiving requests from law enforcements. Windscribe VPN does collect a bit of user data, such as timestamps of your activity and amount of bytes transferred for the last 30 days, but no identifying logs. Personally, I think that’s not better than a proper no-logs policy, but I also think that being honest is a big deal when it comes to cybersecurity. ProtonVPN, on the contrary, is based in Switzerland, outside of intelligence sharing alliances and not subjected to data retention laws. Just like Windscribe, ProtonVPN logs a minimal amount of data, such as timestamps of user login attempts, but without user IP address or other identifiable information.

=== Security ===

And since I’ve started with security, time to see how Windscribe VPN vs ProtonVPN compare on that front. On the first glance, there’s no considerable difference. Both apps offer high-level encryption, a reliable kill switch and split tunneling. According to my tests, these two also don’t have DNS, IPv6 or WebRTC leaks. It would have been a clear draw, if not for the additional security features. Quoting every Windscribe review ever, it has a lot of features. Starting with one that can block ads and tracking attempts, ending with various specialized servers and even a feature that fakes your location and current time. A ProtonVPN review of features is also quite interesting.

=== Speed and Performance ===

Still, if we are going the “free route”, the difference between ProtonVPN vs Windscribe will only keep growing. For instance, Windscribe is the only free VPN with 11 different server locations, some of which have sub-locations. Usually, it’s hard to find a free VPN with all countries you need, but Windscribe seems to check that requirement. ProtonVPN, conversely, only has three, though it does cover Japan, which Windscribe doesn’t. When upgrading to Premium, I saw those server lists rapidly expanding. Now, ProtonVPN prevails in the number of servers, but has the same number of locations as Windscribe.

=== Streaming ===

To begin with, you should know that getting a free VPN for Netflix or other streaming is pretty much impossible now. Most free VPNs just don’t work with streaming. Windscribe and ProtonVPN are no exception to this. Potentially, you could get the Windscribe-Netflix combo to work after countless tries, but I didn’t manage to do so with a free version. As for the premium, it works as well as you would expect, whether it’s Windscribe or ProtonVPN.

=== Pricing ===

ProtonVPN, for starters, has multiple options, ranging from the already familiar ProtonVPN free version, to a very baseline “Basic” plan and advanced “Plus” plan. There’s also a “Visionary” plan, but unless you need a ProtonMail account, I recommend ignoring that plan. Notably,there’s no ProtonVPN free trial so you won’t be able to try this VPN out. With Windscribe, I find the situation to be simpler. There are no “tiers” of plans, you can get either Windscribe VPN free, monthly or annual plan. At the same time, the prices are just a bit higher than ProtonVPNs.
